Helping Preserve Community History Through Education

SHELBYVILLE, KY - A month before the Long Run Massacre & Floyd’s Defeat living history re-enactment is to take place on Saturday, Sept. 9, The Painted Stone Settlers accepted a generous donation from the Longrifle Chapter of the Founding Sons Motorcycle Club of Shelby County. For the last 24 years, the re-enactment group has hosted an extremely popular School Day for area students and parents/teachers.

Kathy Cummings, vice president of the Painted Stone Settlers, called the donation “a wonderful surprise. The money will go towards our School Day event on September 8 when over 800 children will visit the site at Red Orchard Park to learn about pioneer life. The two groups find they have much in common in their values and goals of patriotism, education and support of local non profits.”

The Long Run Massacre depicts life as it was lived in Squire Boone Jr.’s Painted Stone Station and the subsequent evacuation of the fort in September 1781. “Last year a portion of our club went out to watch the Long Run Massacre reenactment and were quite moved by the experience,” said Lael Allen, Secretary/Treasurer for the Longrifle Chapter-Founding Sons MC. One of the members who attended requested that the club vote on making a donation to Painted Stone Settlers. “The membership agreed unanimously and a few months later we voted on the amount of the donation which ended up being $500. We felt that what the Painted Stone Settlers were doing was an extremely important part of the education of our local children (and parents for that matter) regarding the history of our area. We live in a day and age where there are groups of people actively trying (and sometimes succeeding) to erase the history of this great nation. Having a local not-for-profit group that continues to teach and put on an event which displays many of the arts, crafts, and skills that have been long forgotten by today's society is something everyone should get behind. That's what we did!”

The initial Founding Sons Chapter in Kentucky was the Derby City Chapter, active since 2018 and mainly based around the Pleasure Ridge Park, Parkwood, Fairdale area of Louisville. In early 2021 a small group of Derby City members from Shelby County requested to start a chapter there in order to reach out to and recruit new members from the areas further east of the Louisville Metro area, said Allen. On May 6th, 2021 the Longrifle Chapter of the Founding Sons was officially documented. All of the current members reside in Shelby County.

Members are law enforcement and military veterans who have a passion for giving back to the community. The club hosts a weekly open bike night at Marimba Mexican Restaurant in Shelbyville on Wednesdays at 6 pm during the riding season (weather permitting). Allen said, “We also attend and donate to charity motorcycle rides in the area as well as assist our local VFW post 1179 in Shelbyville when at all possible. A few of our club members are also VFW members.” As an example of what they do locally, in 2022 they were part of Shelbyville's Celebration Of Lights and teamed up with the VFW to give out free hot chocolate and cookies. They also handed out candy at Shelbyville Christian Church's Fall Family Fun Fest. “We are always looking for local community events/functions we can help with,” he said.
